It is very cute to think of Hope being Shay's first serious, knee-softening crush. I know he'd been around by the time the game starts (he and Liam talk about the Galway girls, these boys were def getting pulled), but his feelings for Hope might've been the first to grow out of constant proximity to someone he actually gets to know long-term.

Also, he just likes strong authority figures Haytham.

im feixiao dad brainrotting and methinks modern feixiao would work in the military, maybe she adopts a kid too who like her also grew up in an active warzone and lost their parents. maybe she rescues this kid and the kid is now attached to her and vice versa.

she's definitely making that kid get into boxing when they are old enough

omg this could be an expansion to modern!au feixiao lore… feixiao who goes into the military after college maybe for family reasons to honor yueyu or to become like her. she climbs up the ranks with remarkable speed, known in the barracks for her strength, resilience and courage. she makes a point to always call you when she can, even when she’s on deployment. knowing you’re back home waiting for her is always motivation for her to push through.

borisin territory is always a model of hell, though. she slogs through it, gunblades at the ready, her finger always on the trigger. jets shriek over her head, and in the distance she can hear the xianzhou LUX cannons powering up. it hums in the back of her mind, a low vibration in her ears, and she thinks it’s the worst part about the whole job. but she presses ever onward, like a bullet, cutting down borisin slavers and breaking the chains of any slaves under her heel. each one both breaks her heart and drives her forward, but one particular one has her stilling.

a child, with a shock of pure white hair, kneeling in the bloodstained mud, looking up at her with a look feixiao recognises—a look she remembers.

she swallows, then casts her gaze again back to the battlefield. the borisin are retreating, fleeing with their tails between their legs. the lux arrow sings overhead, then detonates the routing borisin with a dull, distant final note. she moves without thinking, crouching down and shielding the child with her body from the harsh winds produced in the fallout.

she feels tiny hands fist in the front of her uniform, wetness in the crook of her neck, and something in feixiao’s heart breaks.

she takes the child back to the xianzhou base, and they refuse to part from her. even when it came to getting the child a medical check-up, they nearly wept themselves unconscious at having to be separated from feixiao. feixiao had to be the one to bathe them; or at least, pass a wet rag over their skin and face for now since she physically couldn’t get them to let her go to properly bathe them. as the child dozes off in her arms that first night, still clinging tight to her, she leans her head back and sighs softly.

what is she even going to tell you?

she prepares for the worst, but you take it… remarkably in stride. you’re surprised, certainly, but she thinks you can see the bond that’s formed between the two, from the way the child holds onto feixiao when she walks through the airport terminal to you. she told you about it in advance over the phone, of course, she wouldn’t spring something so huge as a child on you out of nowhere. but still, it makes her knees nearly give out in relief when she sees you offer the child a small smile and a gentle greeting. you make a point to not get too close to the child when you give her a quick welcome back kiss, ensuring they get to have their personal space, and it warms her heart.

it takes some time for the kid to open up to you, but it happens faster than feixiao expects. or maybe she does expect it somewhat; you’ve always been good with her. in any case, progress is steady—for the first few months the child only ever speaks to feixiao since she knows firsthand how to handle such a child, but soon they start asking you for little things with one word questions, then full sentences, and then they start really talking to you, pointing out things they notice or asking how things work. her heart feels like it might burst the first time she sees the child take your hand in a crowded mall, and she quickly leans over the tiny tears of joy that gather in your lashes.

sometimes she’s so full of love for the both of you she feels dizzy with it. the first time she comes home to see you snuggled on the couch with the child in your arms, both sleeping soundly, she nearly weeps. instead she grabs a blanket from the wardrobe then cuddles right up next to you both, wrapping you in her arms. this is her family now—hers. and there’s nothing in the world she wouldn’t do for you both.

"Hey Fenrir? What's the protocol on roughhousing?" asks the human looking up at the busy orc. Polishing his newly crafted warhammer.

"Headshots are okay for those older than 10 but no aiming for the eyes. No biting or hairpulling or hits below the belt. Keep the fighting on the field. Stop at first blood or when the other says 'stop' or they give up."

"Got it!"

"If you need anything check the shed!"

"Hey Fen, where's Max?"

"He's out training with my siblings and cousins." He looks at the steel, his reflection looking perfectly back at him.

"Training? Like running?"

"No, sparring lessons. He seemed quite excited about it." He leans down to nuzzle the much smaller human.

"Fen."

"Yes love?"

"What exactly did Max tell you he was doing?" the orc looks at her bemused.

"Well, he asked me what the rules were for roughhousing, which I told him, and then he left to go spar with them. Oh and I told him where the sparring weapons are."

"...Fen, roughhousing is play fighting for humans. Not sparring. Just play wrestling. Not actual training with sparring weapons."

"...oh shit."

..

They arrive just in time to watch Max suplexing Fenrir's younger brother to the ground. The teenage orc slams to the ground but is quick to wrestle out of the human's grip.

From opposite sides comes two other teenage orcs. Together they body slam the human while he's still on the ground.

Kim sucks in a breath through her teeth wincing. Fenrir takes a step forward.

The human waves him off though. For he had managed to capture one of the twins upon impact. She was stuck in a headlock and now being used as a meat shield.

From there he managed to stand up with her but was soon overpowered once again.

...

By the end Max was the last one standing although barely. He had just stayed up a second longer than the twins.

Together the human and orcs laid there in the field covered in bruises and dirt. All of them satisfied and rather pleased at a well done sparring session.

"Well it's a good thing they wrestled."

"Are you sure roughhousing doesn't mean the same here as it does on Earth?"

"Eh still no? I mean we do wrestle but don't use weapons."

"Love, Max just used Nyx as a weapon against Echo and Baldur."

"I still don't know how you did that." muttered Nyx.

"Yeah but that's normal!" sputtered the red faced Kim.

"He threw my sister at me! Threw her on top of me!"

"We're like the exact same height as him.." Echo was still trying to figure out how a species weaker and smaller than theirs was able to do that.

"In my defense, Kim's family taught me that one."

"Yeah but I never thought you'd actually do it! It's made for short people against tall people, not humans against orc children!"

I thought maybe I was crazy, but I'm NOT. When Nathan sings or sometimes when he yells, he has a different set of like, mouth models, which I noticed, but didn't think much of. But did you know that they reuse this set for MMA?

I watch this show so much i say shit like "Heyyyy, those teeth look familiar!" but in my defense, I look at every frame of MMA i have every day one million times, and Nathan is the main character (more or less.) How am I not gonna see this eventually?

I guess it makes sense, they both talk in death metal growls and shit.

Alright you get the idea. There's four more below the cut, I just don't want to take up a whole bunch of space on ppl's dash. Also I rant about how MMA is just a Frankenstein's monster of other parts from the show. Because he's basically just a Klokateer with Nathan's mouth.

Despite it being the thing he does for a living, I actually found it hard to find good screenshots of Nathan singing. They do a lot of cool visuals during their shows, and it always shows weird angles of Nathan, which normally i'm all over, but I was so frustrated trying to find him looking forward with no hair in his face and like, the same mouth frame as the ones i know i had of MMA. And it preferred it be from later seasons, because the earlier ones are always so pixelated.

fun fact this face is what tipped me off to them using the same model. At first I thought it was funny that they both pouted like that, but then I started hyper analyzing it and was like "no that. that looks the exact same, actually.... hmmmm"

My favorite frames from metalocalypse are people in the middle of talking, and they do this horrible open mouth face. Charles has a really good one, and i love him a little bit more every time he does it.

THIS one was annoyingly hard to find, I knew Nathan made this face, but when i couldn't remember. Watched about 7 different episodes, scrolling through, looking for it, and then.... there he was, just, jacking off. Thanks Nate, very cool :3

Sort of related rant below.

I've been noticing a lot of weird quirks that I assume came up just because they didn't have a lot of time or maybe money to work with while making the show? When MMA was introduced in season one, it sort of came off like Charles killed him by kicking him into the river. Like, okay, that was fun, and all you nerds at home got to nudge each other and say "hey, that's the guy from the band" but like, that was just some guy, he's not gonna be like, a character.

But we see him later in season two, i think in Dethvengence is the first time he shows back up. So, i can't tell. Was he always going to be reoccurring? Why not try to put even a little more money into making his model? They have a lot of designs sketched up for him (labeled "metal mask assassin", I always thought that was a fandom name but nope, they use MMA on the sketches) and they range from basically how he looks in the show, to "Who is this man in tactical gear and why can I see his eyes?" There are six different sketches for his mask. Just his mask. And then, when the time came for him to be in the show, he's made out klokateer models.

Even when they draw the unique poses, like him fighting Charles in The Church of the Black Klok, we can see like veins on his arms they don't normally draw and stuff, and you can attribute that to trying to keep the model simple, I attribute it to "well, the klokateer arms don't have veins on them so..." Sometimes he has fingerless gloves, even though normally he has regular gloves. I can't tell which things they wanted as part of his design and which things were used because they had them lying around. MMA doesn't even have a looking right (his right, my left???? i think??) model, they just flip his head, which is technically inaccurate to his design, because his face and mask are asymmetrical. and i just wonder, if he's supposed to keep coming back, why can't they ever seem to afford to have him in the show???

I'm not blaming the production team or brendon or anyone else, i'm obviously blaming Adult Swim, like always. SO much of this show feels like "oh if they just had a little more money" that's why the movie is so phenomenal looking, it feels like the kind of shit they maybe always wanted to do with the show, but never could. sucks that MMA died before that could happen. Would've loved to see him in the AOTD style.

anyways, that's. that's my unrelated MMA design rant, i've had that one written out a couple of times just sitting in the drafts, so i figured I'd just shoehorn it into the end of this post. Have a little piece of trivia as a bonus for reading. The model they use for his body is labeled "henchman large" and it's the same one they used for his brother while he was undercover.

Henchman. Venture bros has ruined the word henchman for me, now all I can think about is Gary.

How fucked up is it, that everyone in the prophecy knows they're in the prophecy, except for Magnus and The Assassin? Like, Salacia knows, obviously, DK, Charles, The Water God, everyone. By the time everything starts coming together, everyone else is gearing up for like... a fight for the world. The whole world! They're fighting to stop the apocalypse.

And the whole time, Magnus and MMA are like ":3 Yay!!!! I can't wait to get my revenge!!! Yipee!!!! There are no higher stakes then vengeance! NOTHING else is at stake! Just revenge!!!" as the literal end of the world looms on the horizon. And they're both supposed to die. That's their role in the prophecy. They're just some regular, mortal guys, I think? They don't realize that they're VILLIANS in an ANCIENT PROHPECY (I mean, I guess Magnus gets to know about this for a total of like, 5 minutes before he offs himself, but if anything that's worse cause then he dies as the self-loathing, regretful villain)

and idk I always thought that would be so, so scary. Not to over sympathize with The Revengencers or whatever, I just think that'd be just so upsetting. "Hey, btw, according to the prophecy you don't know about, your life has to suck, you're gonna be angry, mad and hateful your whole life, everyone you like is gonna die or leave you, and you get to fucking DIE horribly. Have fun buddy :)" and they have NO idea the stakes. They're just mad at DK, like regular people (regular in quotes, obviously). They're not magical, they don't get to come back from the dead, like they're just some guys. The most supernatural/unusual thing about them is like, MMA is really strong? that's all I can think of.

I think that's super scary and sad.
